I’ve got to say this is without doubt the most beautiful Airbus A380 I’ve ever seen! Yesterday I drove to Hamburg Finkenwerder Airport, home of airplane manufacturer Airbus, to see this huge orange plane in action. ANA All Nippon Airways ordered three A380s, two of which have already been delivered in blue and turquoise sea turtle liveries. They are mainly used by ANA between Tokyo and Honululu. The third one is orange and made its first cabin test flight yesterday, its third flight in total. It’s an amazing looking plane! It made a flight of almost 3 hours, flew at high altitude over the airport, and after landing it taxiet up and down the runway before going back to the hangar. I am so happy with the footage of this big fella! Enjoy!

Following on from my previous video where I took a highly enjoyable flight in business class aboard ANA’s Flying Honu A380 from Tokyo to Honolulu, it’s now time for me to head back to Tokyo, but this time in first class, after having enjoyed all that Hawaii has to offer, including its superb beaches, rich surfing culture, dancing and entertainment.
At Honolulu airport, I take the opportunity to examine the lounges available to ANA customers. I take the Wiki bus shuttle as the lounges are at the opposite end of the airport from check in and I don’t fancy a 15 minute walk – when you’re flying first class, the key is relaxation; there are other more appropriate times for furious exercise!
The first ANA airport lounge that we examine at Honolulu airport is the ANA Suite Lounge. You are eligible to enter this lounge if you are a first class or diamond member of the ANA mileage club. The food, in particular, offered by the ANA Suite Lounge is sublime with a range of authentic Japanese cuisine on offer, including a number of very fine soups and broths.
We also examine the Main lounge which is open to Star Alliance gold members and American Express gold and platinum card holders. The décor of the lounge makes for a very relaxing and natural feel, with the lounge dominated by a decorative tree, whose branches merge in to the ceiling. There’s even a children’s creche area so that you can relax without having children running around you.
After boarding the flying Honu, it’s time to enjoy everything that ANA first class has to offer! The seat is very wide and the first class cabin features a very useful, nifty little pullout clothes rail, so that you can store your shirt or trousers without creasing them during the flight.
I am presented with a large selection of complimentary comforts to choose from by the highly professional ANA flight attendants including lip balm, socks, eye masks and even a heavy organic cotton blanket! Their signature amenity kit has an exterior which looks like a miniature suitcase – so cool!
The first class bathroom certainly does not disappoint with a state of the art, automated Japanese style bidet system and complimentary energising skin lotions. There’s even a pull down platform which you can use to assist in getting changed – ANA really think of lots of little clever ways to make your time in first class rewarding, refreshing and relaxing.
Although the food service itself does take time (and I feel sorry for the airline attendants who have to work in what I consider to be a rather cramped galley for serving eight first class customer meals simultaneously), the quality of the food itself is absolutely excellent. I am treated to caviar, a truffle and cream tart, ahi tuna tataki and corn soup and that’s just for starters! The real show stopper which really bowls me over is the veal cheek with foie gras. The dessert is lovely and a real palette cleanser – a sorbet designed by the Four Seasons Lanai Resort.
I do not go thirsty either with champagne, orange juice, special apple juice wine and a premium selection of carefully selected white and red wines all being served.
After a nap to digest all of that (and after a curry and a cheeseburger – well, it was a long flight!), I share some tips with you regarding the best way to fly in premium classes such as business class and first class with ANA which I believe is by using air miles. I think it’s very good that ANA have promised that seats will be available to freedom flyers who fly with clubs such as United Airlines Mileage Plus and the Virgin Flying Club.
