Midas Mode is a Dota 2 game mode created by MoonDuck. The mode is centered around fun tactics, bounties and a whole new type of currency called Moonbucks. The mode drew tons of attention, to the point that it received a tournament way back in November 2017. The tournament used a round-robin format and included teams from Europe and North America.

This year, MoonDuck brought Midas Mode back to the Dota 2 community. This time with a new region participating. Midas Mode 2.0 featured Asia in its regional groups and with a prize pool of $150,000, which was divided among the three regional groups. Teams did not hesitate to join in on the fun.

This year, Midas Mode 2.0 featured two online mascots that are apart of the mode. Mr. Midas and Sir. Sadim, brothers that love and hate each other. This time around, Sir. Sadim is in charge:

Midas Mode 2.0 ran a period of eight days: September 24 to October 2.

Basic Rules

The mode’s rules are quite interesting. Considering it’s an entirely different game, the mode has its own unique rules:

Added in-game currency called MoonBucks

• Each team starts out with 7,500 MoonBucks

Actions that cost Moonbucks

• Picking/Banning Heroes (Price differs depending on the pick rate/win rate of the hero. Prices change after every match)
• Pausing the game
• Choosing sides (Blind auction)

Actions that give Moonbucks

• Randoming
• Passing on Bans
• Completing Bounties (Challenges that change every day and reward double if the game is won)

Penalties for running out of Moonbucks

• Teams can only pick the cheapest heroes
• Teams cannot ban heroes, pause the match or choose sides

Who participated in the event?

Midas Mode 2 had a share of trouble before its commencement. The tournament was announced months ago before its start which created scheduling problems.

Valve released plans for the Dota 2 Pro Circuit last September. The plans which set dates for their qualifiers created obstacles for Mooduck and their respective business partners.

An uproar of the Dota 2 community resolved the issue, fixing conflicting DPC schedules. With conclusion to the issue, professional Dota 2 players rushed to secure a piece of the fun.

Results of Midas Mode 2.0

It was a long but entertaining week of events—from teams completing absurd challenges to casters and hosts performing insane stunts.

Throughout the tournament, professional teams have only been looking to have fun. Thanks to Moonduck, that was accomplished.

Although the event was made to provide enjoyment to the DOTA 2 community, a tournament always consists of a winner. Each regional bracket had their respective highlights:

Midas Mode 2 was another relaxing occasion for everyone to experience. Despite the recent troublesome scheduling with Valve. The tournament still pulled through and as a result. People are more interested in DOTA 2 game-mode styled tournaments.  Thanks to MoonDuck and supporters like SirActionSlacks. Midas Mode 2 has been a successful event yet again.

A Mango a day keeps the doctor away

Game Theory

Teams agree to deny their bounty runes at game start. If all 4 runes are denied, both teams get the reward. If any bounty rune is picked up, neither does.

A person with invisibility (not included being smoked) can type something spooky in chat. The bounty is won if they manage to kill an enemy hero in 5 seconds after saying “boo.”

Team Building Exercise

When a member of your team dies, they must all chat an apology to their own team for something they did IRL. Each person on the team must do this once during the game to collect the bounty.

The Great Migration

Teams must start at either end of the river as 5, and travel all the way to the opposite end without losing a hero. All chat “quack, quack, quack” to start. All enemy heroes must be alive at challenge start. You are a migrating flock of beautiful creatures, so remember to stay together as close as possible. If a fight occurs feel free to spread out for the engagement but you must return to 5 to where the fight began and then finish your journey to collect your reward.

For the Fans!

A player must all chat “VIP Experience” before his team attempts Roshan. If one hero dies in the attempt to Roshan or they successfully defeat Roshan, the team received the reward. Should the hero be killed by the enemy the reward will not be assessed. Must be complete before 20 minutes.

Not my fault

The player who dies first on their team must explain how it was their team’s fault they died. They must remain in the fountain for an additional 30 seconds after respawning to receive the bounty.

When will I ever use this in real life?

A maths problem will be written in all chat between 5 and 10 minutes into each game. The first team that answers correctly will receive a reward.

Moonduck Studios’ BETWAY Midas Mode 2.0 tournament is only days away. They’ve announced talent , they’ve announced benefits of attending , they’ve told us what the stakes are, so what’s left? Teams!

Are you hyped?  Are you shocked? Are these the teams you expected?

If you said yes to the last one, I’m calling shenanigans.

What can I say after such an incredible audio/visual presentation? There’s nothing we can write that will do justice to the hype and awe of the official announcement video.

But, for the sake of providing an overview, let’s talk quickly about the teams competing at BETWAY Midas Mode 2.0.

North America

First up, North America! North America is scheduled to start competing first, beginning September 24.

Of the announced teams, we don’t yet have a roster for beastcoast. Those details will come soon, we hope. Meanwhile, uh, they have an adorable mascot named Crest!

Team Anvorgesa, the only South American team competing, are wading into Midas Mode for the first time. They recently competed at The International 2019 under the Infamous banner, but parted ways with the organization shortly afterward. They defied naysayers, placing a solid seventh-eighth at TI9. This opportunity to watch this talented team kick back and play a goofier game mode is sure to be entertaining.

Team number three is J.Storm. Having recently confirmed their roster, J.Storm will debut with Peruvian player Joel Mori “MoOz” Ozambela at Midas Mode. We haven’t seen this squad compete in two months, since DOTA Summit 10. A lot can change in that time (other than a player!), and this team could certainly compete for the best Midas Mode-rs in North America.

Fighting Pepegas is North America’s wild card team. It’s the new Jacky “EternaLEnVy” Mao stack, featuring Envy, Jonathan Bryle “bryle” Santos De Guia, David “MoonMeander” Tan, Jingjun “Sneyking” Wu and Kurtis “Aui_2000” Ling.  This squad is majority Canadian, something we haven’t seen in a while. Naturally, we hope they pick the Canadian-ized Skywrath Mage at least once.

China

Next, let’s look at China. This is the last region to compete in BETWAY Midas Mode 2.0, beginning on September 29.

Vici Gaming are currently down a man as Pan “Fade” Yi decided to step away from the squad post-The International 2019. But even with only four players, this is a fearsome team! (And we’re sure they’ll fill the spot before the competition begins!) Vici Gaming may not have competed in Midas Mode before (because the first Midas Mode only featured North American and European teams), but they placed second in the Captain’s Draft 4.0 tournament Moonduck hosted in early 2018. Captain’s Draft and Midas Mode are….well, nowhere near the same thing. But they’re both *not* the traditional Captain’s Mode, so maybe that experience will count for something.

EHOME is in the unique position of having seven players, one of them a loaner from Team Serenity. Which five will compete in Midas Mode? Tune in on September 29 to find out! Remember that Zhang “xiao8” Ning coaches this squad, regardless of who plays on it, and he brings a wealth of experience and ingenious tactics to the table.

Fnatic will compete, the only Southeast Asian squad to do so, but with two stand-ins. One of them will be Kim “Febby” Yong-min, who famously won the MVP award when he stood in for a Mineski player at ESL One Mumbai 2019.

The final Chinese team will be BurNIng’s Legion. Featuring Xu “BurNIng” Zhilei, this squad is bound to delight fans of Chinese Dota 2. This is the China wild card team, with a collection of players not associated with a single team.

Europe

Europe is, in our opinion, the most hype region of all. Competing in the middle of the event

To start, we’re going to see The International 2018 AND 2019 winners compete in their first post-TI9 event. Yes, OG will be on hand to show other teams how Midas Mode is done. And yes, both Topias “Topson” Taavitsainen and Anathan “ana” Pham will compete, despite their recent “taking a break” statements.  Confirmed: Best players in the world are more tempted by Midas Mode than Dota 2 Pro Circuit events.

There will be a wild card team competing in Europe made up of popular streamers. They’re competing under the name Sir Sadim’s Stunners.  This will include Moonduck-er Troels “syndereN” Nielsen, Janne “Gorgc” Stefanovski, WehSing “SingSing” Yuen, Alaan “SexyBamboe” Faraj and Niklas “Wagamama” Högström. Expect them to up the ante on entertainment as streamers should have a unique understanding

Midas Mode will also feature the reunited The International 2013-winning Alliance roster. Alliance CEO Jonathan “Loda” Berg will return to competitive play alongside Gustav “s4” Magnusson, Henrik “AdmiralBulldog” Ahnberg, Jerry “EGM” Lundkvist and Joakim “Akke” Akterhall. This Alliance line-up gave us some of the most hype moments in Dota 2. Imagine what they can do when equipped with all the goofiness of Midas Mode!

And last, but by no means least, the original Kings return! The final European team, final team joining Midas Mode is the Original. The International. Winning. Roster. Yes, it’s TI1 Natus Vincere! Fans have long begged for a reunion of Danil “Dendi” Ishutin and Clement “Puppey” Ivanov. Beg no more! They’ll be joined by Alexander “XBOCT” Dashkevich, Ivan “Artstyle” Antonov and Dmitriy “LighTofHeaveN” Kupriyanov.
