The world of Dota 2 is filled to the brim with hundreds, if not thousands of different cosmetic items for almost all of the heroes available in the game. Even then, there are just a handful of these items which carry the weight of the highest rarity in the game. The Dota 2 Arcanas.

Dota 2 Arcana Rankings

Over the years, we have seen a number of new Dota 2 Arcanas for the game. However, after The International 2014, a new trend was brought to light which gave way to a new voting process between all of the heroes available in the game. In the end, the one hero with the most number of votes was chosen for the next Arcana. And since Pudge won the voting contest during The International 2018, the developers have recently released the Arcana for the hero, bringing the total count of Arcanas to 12.

However, not all of these Dota 2 Arcanas do justice to the category of the rarest items in the game. With some carrying only a few visual changes,  some of them bring with them a number of bugs, not all of the Arcanas are worth buying. Hence, if you are looking to get your hands on the sought-after Dota 2 Arcanas but are wondering which one to get, then I have for you a list of all of the Arcanas, ranking them from first being the worst and the last being the best, based on their design, effects, and overall visual appeal.

Let’s get on with it then:

Fiery Soul of the Slayer





 “It has often been said that Lina’s hair was touched by fire, though few know the truth of this claim. In Lina’s youth, as her natural talents first began to smoke and smolder it was her fiery hair that told the tale of the storm to come. With time and training, her skill and control of the flame was enough to suppress the searing display. Yet on occasion, when her ire grows and tempers flare, the full measure of Lina’s burning spirit threatens to unleash its wrath.” – Lore 

Though the Fiery Soul of the Slayer Arcana features unique animation and icon effects, the overall visual appeal is very minimal. I understand that this is the very first Arcana for Dota 2, and that means a lot to everyone, but that being said, I don’t think it is worth it. As an item, I love it, but as an Arcana, I think, it is the worst available in Dota 2, till now that is.

Feast of Abscession



“Centuries ago, the Rumusque priestess Crella forged unbreakable links of hook and chain to bind the most powerful servants of the Dead God. But the Dead God’s corruption grew too strong even for Crella’s revered enchantments. Taken up with the rhythm of the Dirge, her chains abandoned their charge, turning instead to carry out the destruction of Crella’s homeland at the Dead God’s command. Now, their vile purpose long since served, the Chains of Abscession have sworn service to a new master… and the delights of butchery.” – Lore

Having won the Arcana Voting Contest during The International 2018, The Feast of Abscession is the most recent addition to the list of Dota 2 Arcanas. The Pudge Arcana, while loved by many and I know the majority of you are going to disagree with us, but I think it is one of the ugliest looking Arcanas available in Dota 2.

I understand that the ugliness is the charm of it, but I think Valve could have done a better job. It just looks like a cheap rip-off of the anime series, Tokyo Ghoul. That being said, I have to say, the Dismember animation looks quite badass.

Great Sage’s Reckoning



“Though his misdeeds have long been forgiven, the thrills of Sun Wukong’s crimes live on. Relive three legendary trials from his earliest adventures with the Great Sage’s Reckoning.” – Lore

The Great Sage’s Reckoning Arcana for Monkey King is one of the more recent additions to the mix which came with the release of the hero, himself. The Arcana features some of the best visual effects in Dota 2. However, I believe the three different styles are what make this Arcana tacky.

The original form looks incredible, but when you upgrade the character’s ultimate, the blue, green and yellow form, makes this Arcana one of our least favorites. And I understand, I will get a lot of hate for this, but this is our own personal opinion.

Swine of the Sunken Galley



“After months of work, Techies Demolitions proudly unveiled their latest commission: The Swine, the most powerful cannon ever designed. Yet during its first frantic use aboard a homebound galley, the Swine’s awesome blast tore its host ship asunder, rocketing the cannon itself backwards toward the shore. It was found days later, deeply embedded in a rocky cliffside just below its makers’ workshop.” – Lore

The Swine of the Sunken Gallery is an Arcana for Techies which was released back in September 2014. With the addition of a Prismatic Gem, the Arcana features some interesting visual changes and effects. However, since Techies is a very difficult hero to play with, the Swine of the Sunken Galley is the most unpopular Arcana of the lot. For instance, in our 4000+ hours in Dota 2, I have yet to see this Arcana being used in Dota 2.

Fractal Horns of Inner Abysm



“Deep in the hell of Hell, Terrorblade lay bound behind fractal walls, sentenced to an eternity of twisted contemplation. He stared long into the reflection of his own worst self. And long did his worst self-stare into him. Now they rise together, a single entity more powerful than ever before.” – Lore

Terrorblade’s Fractal Horns of Inner Abysm features incredible animations, which when combined with a large number of Prismatic Gems you can equip, this is one of the best looking Arcanas available in the game. However, unfortunately, the release of the Arcana was marred by a lot of bugs, out of which, some still exist. It is because of this, the Fractal Horns of Inner Abysm Arcana is not very popular in the Dota 2 community.

Benevolent Companion



“The wispy tendrils of Io the Fundamental can be found in all planes of the universe, having existed across the boundaries of realms known and unknown since before time itself. After an eternity of exploring the span of its mystic province, Io knows that no matter where the tide of battle leads, the bonds of friendship will always carry the day.” – Lore

The Benevolent Companion is one of the few cosmetic items in Dota 2 which take inspiration from another one of Valve’s original games. The Io Arcana features a design similar to Portal’s Weighted Companion Cube. It is almost the exact replica of it.

This combined with the fact that you don’t have to pay a single penny to get your hands on this Arcana (included in the Compendium 2017), makes the Io Arcana one of our favorites in the game. Plus, the Ultimate animation is just too freaking awesome.

Demon Eater



“Shadow Fiend has long collected the souls of his enemies. As is the case with any collector, some prizes have stood above others, to be sought out at any cost. However, there are certain souls that should not be tried, and forces so dark and filled with rage that no being could hope to contain them. Thus did Shadow Fiend learn the price, and gift, that comes with stealing the souls of demons, and he was changed evermore.” – Lore

Before 2014, Shadow Fiend had one of the worst looking avatars in the game. However, in September 2014, Valve completely reworked the character, making it look a whole lot better. And with the rework, came Shadow Fiend’s Arcana.

Now, some say the Arcana looks very similar to the base model, but I think, otherwise, especially if you look at the animations, the Arcana adds. From water evaporation effects to changes to all of the hero and ability icons, The Demon Eater is one of the better Arcanas you can get your hands on in Dota 2.

Tempest Helm of the Thundergod



“Forged by the Hammers of Celestarr and imbued with the energies of the Ancients, this mighty helm feels at home resting across the brow of the Lord of Heaven himself. The faithless shall tremble as true thunder rolls across the fields of battle!” – Lore

After winning The International 2015 Arcana Voting Contest, an Arcana was announced for Zeus. By the year-end, we witnessed the release of the Tempest Helm of the Thundergod Arcana Set which came with not only an Arcana item but also two mythical items. Though, these two additional items, only made the character drop his original attire, the combination of all three of them was just too awesome.

Some might say that the helmet style of the Arcana does not do justice to the Arcana and the character would look better without it. Meanwhile, it does make sense, but for us, the helmet even looks damn good. Furthermore, the potential of this Arcana to be equipped with other cosmetic items is absolutely incredible. It goes with every item you can get your hands on. This is the reason why I think the Zeus Arcana deserves a spot on this list.

Bladeform Legacy



“Yurnero’s mask has been cleaved in two, awakening the ancient souls that once laid dormant inside it. These spirits have become one with Yurnero, giving him both the wisdom and fury of his ancestors. This symbiotic relationship has transformed the Juggernaut into something new and terrifying… a celestial force of nature.” – Lore

After losing to Phantom Assassin during The International 2014 Arcana Voting Contest, the Dota 2 community was quite disappointed with the result. However, two years late when Juggernaut won in the voting process during The International 2016, the Arcana for the hero was finally released in 2017.

The initial response for the Juggernaut Arcana was quite disappointing as the community did not like the original blue color of the skin since it did not go with any other cosmetic item. This led to quite a severe backlash. However, just a week later, the developers released a second style which kept the character’s original orange persona. If just the physical appeal was not enough, the ability animations and effects are just too freaking good.

Frost Avalanche



“Some say the garment began as the wedding gown of an ancient queen. Others say it was once a battle cloak of a frost ogre. In truth, the enchanted fabric is as malleable as an avalanche, and can mold itself into various forms. This form has attracted a lone wolf pup, who has now become a hardy and loyal companion.” – Lore

The Dota 2 community was taken by storm when Valve, randomly, announced the release of Crystal Maiden Arcana, Frost Avalanche, back in 2015. And since then, this is one of the best Arcanas available for the support class. With custom animations, effects and icons that come with the Arcana, the community including us, are absolutely in love with this Arcana.

And if that was not enough, the addition of the pet is the cherry on top. Who doesn’t want an adorable, little dog running beside you? No one. So, if you are the one who loves to support, then I would recommend you to get your hands on the Frost Avalanche Arcana.

Blades of Voth Domosh



“Set in her vengeance against the abyss, Tresdin approached the baleful armorer Qwyth, who gifted to her these hellbound blades. Though she obtained the swords without cost, she may realize too late that the price extracted for wielding such incredible power could be more than she is willing to part with…” – Lore

Back in 2013, when Valve announced Legion Commander, an Arcana was released alongside the character called Blades of Voth Domosh, making it the second Arcana in the history of Dota 2. However, unlike the very first Arcana, Blades of Voth Domosh featured a number of unique elements and animation changes.

From incredible visual tweaks to the overall character, and to ability changes, The Legion Commander Arcana has it all. It is because of this Arcana, why I think Fiery Soul of the Slayer could have done better.

Moreover, since the Arcana takes the Weapons slot, the possibility of customized sets is endless. You can literally equip any other set, and Legion Commander would look like an absolute beast. It is this level of customization why I think; the Legion Commander is the second best Arcana in Dota 2.

Manifold Paradox

“With a raspy cackle, the elder smith Craler swung the sword that his family had spent eleven generations to fold and forge. So sharp it was that, with a sound like tearing fabric, a rip in reality tore open. Through this rip, Craler recognized himself from moments before, holding aloft the very same coveted blade. Then, in a fit of greed and madness, he cut this earlier self-down to seize the twin sword as his own. Too late, however, Craler felt a familiar wound, and was suddenly filled with the memory of being cut down himself…” – Lore

The crown for the best Arcana in Dota 2 goes to Manifold Paradox, the Phantom Assassin Arcana. The item came along with the Nemesis Assassin Event in 2014 which allowed the owners of the Arcana to unlock new styles by accumulating kills during the event. These new styles were quite a good bonus. However, the actual arcana, itself was the highlight.

The Manifold Paradox Arcana stayed true with the actual persona of the character, only enhancing it when needed. Plus, with some spectacular visual animation changes and effects, the community quickly become a fan of the PA Arcana.

Just like the Legion Commander Arcana, the Manifold Paradox also blends in with other cosmetic sets quite easily, making every other set look even better. With all of the incredible effects and animations available, I rank the Manifold Paradox as the best Dota 2 Arcana to date.

Final Words

Before you go on to rant on the ranking above, I would like to tell you that these are just my opinions on the Dota 2 Arcana. And since preference is a personal thing, the opinions can matter, person to person. So, before you go on hating this blog, it is better if you give us your say on the Dota 2 Arcanas.

Aghanim’s Scepter (also known as Aghs or Scepter) is a powerful item used to passively increase the power of a hero’s spells, usually their ultimate. The upgrade that Aghanim’s Scepter provides can be anything from a new ability to simply an increase in power. Aghanim’s Scepter can be consumed as a buff by purchasing the recipe upgrade Aghanim’s Blessing. The buff does not grant stat bonuses, but does make the effects of Ultimate Upgrade permanent.

If dropped or sold, the upgrade is lost until the hero is in possession of it again. Due to irreversible effects, scepter cannot be dropped or sold by Meepo and Lifestealer.

About Hero
Mortred, the Phantom Assassin, is a melee agility hero fitting the role of hard carry. Mortred is bestknown, and infamous for, her ability to inflict staggering damage with single strikes. Her abilities synergize supremely well with each other, rendering her an extremely formidable foe once she has acquired the items she requires. She is a very farmdependent melee Hero, but she farms creeps with much more ease than many of her fellow carries, using her Stifling Dagger for last hitting. Besides eliminating the weakness most melee Heroes have in their farming, it also saves her from expending gold on important melee carry items like Quelling Blade. Her second ability, Phantom Strike, acts as both her escape and initiate, while Blur gives her an edge against other Heroes that depend on their physical attacks by evading them; giving her partial damage immunity to many carries. Her ultimate, the strongest critical strike in the game, is what connects Mortred with fourdigit damage and what gives her a place amongst the very best support killers in the late game, since they usually fall instantly from the divine strike her ultimate provides. Mobile and able to fight back nearly every enemy that dares to face her, Mortred is a formidable foe that should never be underestimated, and with appropriate item choices and a few kills, she can snowball out of control and become next to impossible to stop.
