What is NEST?

NEST is a simulator for spiking neural network models that focuses on the dynamics, size and structure of neural systems rather than on the exact morphology of individual neurons. The development of NEST is coordinated by the NEST Initiative.

NEST is ideal for networks of spiking neurons of any size, for example:

  1. Models of information processing e.g. in the visual or auditory cortex of mammals,
  2. Models of network activity dynamics, e.g. laminar cortical networks or balanced random networks,
  3. Models of learning and plasticity.

How do I use NEST?

You can use NEST either with the interpreted programming language Python (PyNEST) or as a stand alone application (nest).
PyNEST provides a set of commands to the Python interpreter which give you access to NEST’s simulation kernel. With these commands, you describe and run your network simulation.
You can also complement PyNEST with PyNN, a simulator-independent set of Python commands to formulate and run neural simulations. While you define your simulations in Python, the actual simulation is executed within NEST’s highly optimized simulation kernel which is written in C++.

A NEST simulation tries to follow the logic of an electrophysiological experiment that takes place inside a computer with the difference, that the neural system to be investigated must be defined by the experimenter.

The neural system is defined by a possibly large number of neurons and their connections. In a NEST network, different neuron and synapse models can coexist. Any two neurons can have multiple connections with different properties. Thus, the connectivity can in general not be described by a weight or connectivity matrix but rather as an adjacency list.

To manipulate or observe the network dynamics, the experimenter can define so-called devices which represent the various instruments (for measuring and stimulation) found in an experiment. These devices write their data either to memory or to file.

NEST is extensible and new models for neurons, synapses, and devices can be added.

Why should I use NEST?

  1. NEST provides over 50 neuron models many of which have been published. Choose from simple integrate-and-fire neurons with current or conductance based synapses, over the Izhikevich or AdEx models, to Hodgkin-Huxley models.
  2. NEST provides over 10 synapse models, including short-term plasticity (Tsodyks & Markram) and different variants of spike-timing dependent plasticity (STDP).
  3. NEST provides many examples that help you getting started with your own simulation project.
  4. NEST offers convenient and efficient commands to define and connect large networks, ranging from algorithmically determined connections to data-driven connectivity.
  5. NEST lets you inspect and modify the state of each neuron and each connection at any time during a simulation.
  6. NEST is fast and memory efficient. It makes best use of your multi-core computer and compute clusters with minimal user intervention.
  7. NEST runs on a wide range of UNIX-like systems, from MacBooks to BlueGene supercomputers.
  8. NEST has minimal dependencies. All it really needs is a C++ compiler. Everything else is optional.
  9. NEST developers are using agile continuous integration-based workflows in order to maintain high code quality standards for correct and reproducible simulations.
  10. NEST has one of the largest and most experienced developer communities of all neural simulators. NEST was first released in 1994 under the name SYNOD and has been extended and improved ever since.
  11. NEST is open source software and is licensed under the GNU General Public License v2 or later.

Is the Nest Right For Your Home?

If you’re looking for ways to save money on heating and cooling costs, you’ve probably considered the Nest. The first smart thermostat to hit the market, the Nest is referred to as a “learning” thermostat, meaning that it intuitively sets temperatures in your home based on your daily schedule and preferences. The app links to your phone, so it knows when you leave for work, when you go to bed, that you’ve got wine club on Tuesday nights, and spin class on Thursday mornings. When you are home, it understands how warm or cool you want your environment based on the time of day. It uses all this information to bring your home to the perfect temperature without you having to lift a finger. And in the process, it saves you money, since your system is running as efficiently as possible.

Nest thermostats offer users a number of benefits, but there are still some potential drawbacks that you should consider.

Advantages & Disadvantages of the Nest Thermostat

1. Money Matters

One of the biggest drawbacks to the Nest is the initial investment — at $250, they’re around $100 more expensive than other smart thermostats currently available. But the energy savings add up fast.

Research shows the Nest saves the average user somewhere around $130-145 each year, meaning it pays for itself in two years’ time. Many cities also offer a rebate (Austin Energy currently offers $85), so your upfront costs might not be as steep as you think.

The Nest also tracks your energy usage and shows you daily and monthly reports, allowing you to see when you’re using the most energy and how you might be able to make better choices.

2. Control Issues

Your smartphone allows you complete control over your home’s temperature, even when you’re miles away.

Coming back from vacation and want your home to be nice and cool the moment you walk in the door? A few clicks on your phone, and you’re all set.

Even better, the Nest knows how efficient your system is (i.e., how long it will take to cool your home from its current temperature), so it starts the process at the optimal time.

On the other hand, what you set isn’t always what you get.

The Nest has a three degree temperature swing. So if you set it to 70, it might end up anywhere between 67 to 73. This is all part of helping you save money by working efficiently, but if you’re a stickler for temperatures that are “just right”, the Nest might not be for you.

3. Master Monitor

As well as learning about your habits and your home’s efficiency, the Nest is also connected to the outside world.

If Austin temperatures drop unexpectedly in the middle of a blazing summer (one can only hope!), the Nest will adjust your thermostat accordingly and give your AC a much-needed break.

It will also send you an alert if it notices something wrong with your unit or to warn you about upcoming weather conditions that might affect the unit’s performance.

What’s the Verdict? Do the Benefits of Nest Thermostats Outweigh the Cons?

Although there are many benefits to installing a Nest thermostat, the Nest does have some drawbacks- the price-tag is high, the temperature isn’t precise, and it takes some time to teach it your ways.

Additionally, not all homes are equipped to power the Nest’s internal rechargeable battery and may require a C-wire installation (check Nest’s website for more info on this).

However, HVAC specialists agree its overall efficiency, integration into your daily life, and savings can’t be beat. If you’re looking for a smart way to cut cooling costs, this smart thermostat is a great choice.

Màn hình to: Màn hình em này to 10′, xem Youtube đồ sướng hơn màn hình 7′ của dòng nhỏ nhiều
Loa to vật vã: Loa của Nest Hub Max to hơn Nest Hub rất nhiều, nghe có lực hơn hẳn. Tuy nhiên anh em lưu ý là loa sẽ không dập bass tức ngực đâu nhé, nó to và hay nhưng là so với kính thước của nó thôi.
